Once again, both the weather and the racing was hot at the Jamie Martin Invitational hosted by Sanborn HS held on Kingston Commons. With a mix of Division 2 and 3 schools with designs to be running post season at the Meet of Champions and beyond, this early season meet gives an insight into who has done their summer home work and who has work to do.
Getting things going was West phenom Julia Robitialle and teammate/twin sister Corrine as they tore up the town green shadowed by 2017 D3 champ Mya Dube of Kearsarge and Milford’s Lauren Robinson. Suspiciously, the Con Val crew lay in wait, running as a pack back in the main chase pack. This pattern would hold through the mile where Julia was beginning to gap her chasers. As the field returned through the two mile Julia had stretched the field and the closest chaser was beginning to grow a gap back to third and fourth. At this time the CV crew had begun their march towards the front, slicing through the competition on the way back through the single track and past the town lake.
In the end Julia Robatialle would win comfortably in 18 minutes, 31 seconds. Dube would be second, twenty seven seconds back. Robinson would hold on to third with Corrine in fourth. Fifth was the hometown’s Avery Scully followed by CV’s Schuyler Michalak, then Campbell’s Cassie Hemming, the duo of Rachel Hurley and Claire Ververka of CV and Kearsarge’s Jenna Baer rounding out the top ten.
With their top 6 in the top 30, the Con Val girls would win this one easily, 48 to 82 over Campbell. Milford would be third with 95 points, Kearsarge fourth with 117 and Hollis/Brookline fifth with 148.
On the boys side, things got going when a four man contingent of Trinity runners decided to show those in attendance that they intend to shake things up in the Division 3 ranks this year. Their top four escorted Campbell’s Jeffrey Allen and the rest of the field down the town commons and into the woods at a quick clip. Stretched out behind them were runners from Sanborn, Kearsarge and Mascenic, jockeying for position before things got too narrow.
By the mile, Allen had established the front position and in control. The duo of Sanborn’s Dylan Khalil and Owen Stocker were working to split up the Trinity foursome with Mascenic’s Logan Thibault, Milford’s Caleb Korthals, HB’s Kenny Corsetti and West’s Maxwell Frazier working on whittling down the front pack. The racing would remain hot with only Allen getting away.
Allen would go on to win in a very quick 16 minutes, 11 seconds under some very warm weather conditions and some tough course conditions. The Sanborn duo would take the next two spots, with Khalil securing second and dipping under the 17 minute mark. Danny Donovan of Trinity would follow in fourth with Korthals in fifth. Positions six through 10 would be occupied by Corsetti, Thibault, Alex Cermak and James Barrett of Trinity, and Frazier.
Trinity would smoke the field, going 26 points up on runner up Kearsarge. Campbell would take third with 98 points, Con Val in fourth with 118 and Mascenic back in fifth with 125. With four of the top five in this one all being in Division 3, look for an exciting finish to the season come October 27th!
